Watch and thee, absent another’ traverses the affective edge between soft and hard. Through experimental modes of painting, as well as an approach that shifts between intuitive and formal, Longley explores and attempts to empty out romantic symbols (images) that allude to something greater than what is present. Deeming them fallible in their ability to hold emotional water. By manipulating (re-invigorating) clichés - historical, sentimental, and contemporary – her work induces a moment where viewers both feel, and recognize the mechanisms inspiring (or fabricating) their feeling.
